Abstract
Goldfish
Carassius aurutas (average 121.25) were continuously exposed to
10, 30, and 50 _g Cu/I under aquarium conditions. Effect of copper
(Cu) on quantitative changes in total serum protein (TSP) of test
fish was measured after 2,4 and 6 weeks to compare with the control
(Cu unexposed). The TSP of test fish exposed to various sublethal
treatments of Cu for different durations were significantly (P<1.01)
different from each other and the control. The lowest TSP obtained
in control group ranged from 2.08±0.07 to 2.22±0.043 g/dl. The highest
amount of TSP (3.11±0.031 g/dl) was obtained from the test fish exposed
to 30µg Cu/I after 6 weeks. The Cu exposure-level dependent increase
of TSP was observed in all the three treatments which started decreasing
at 50µg Cu/I after 6 weeks. The TSP showed significant (P<0.05)
positive correlation to both sublethal
Cu exposure levels and
exposure time.

Abstract
The continuous
release of heavy metals at low
levels in the environment is a matter of serious concern because at
these levels the individual is exposed to the pollutant at subchronic
levels and subtoxic luvels. Hence in the present study we studied
the effect of subchronic,
sublethal levels of Ni, a heavy metal, on some haematological and humoral immune parameters in mice.
Our results reveal that Ni exposure at sublethal and subcheonic levels
could bring about dose dependent alterations in sole heamatological
parameters and affected the development of anti-SRBC and anti-BSA
antibody and also caused
a decline in B lymphocytes. Hence Ni exposee more prone
to infection.

EFFECT OF SUBCHRONIC
SUBLETHAL DOSES OF NICKEL ON SOME CELL
MEDIATED IMMUNE PARAMETERS

Abstract
The
effect of subchronic, sublethal doses of nickel chloride has been
studied on some cell mediated immune
parameters viz. leukocyte migration inhibition, leukocyte adherence
inhibition and NBT reduction. The Ni exposure at subchrnic and
sublethal doses results in
a dose dependent depression in
T cell mediated function but activitates the
phagocytes.

Abstract
Crotepoxide
a cytotoxic cyclohexane derivatives and N-benzoyl-O-(N´-benzoyl-L-phenylalanyl)-l-phenylalaninol,
an N-benzoyl ester of phenylalanine were isolated from the ethyl acetate
extract of the stem bark of Desmos longiflorus (Annonaceae). The structures of these compounds were determined by extensive spectroscopic analyses (UV, IR, H
NMR, 13C NMR and EIMS). This is
the first report of the
presence of N-benzoyl-O-(N´-benzoyl-L-phenylalanyl)-L-phenylalninol i9n an Annonaceous plant. Preliminary
screenings have shown that this compound also possesses cytotoxic
activity.

Abstract
Enzymes with
deamidating activity from germinating wheat grains was purified about
570-fold first by chromatography on
hydroxylapatite and then
on DEAE-cellulose columns. When this procedure was applied
to the deamidase of kidney
beans and squash the degrees of purification were about 210 and 250-fold
and the specific activities were about 770 mU/mg and 880mU/mg respectively.
Polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis showed the purified deamidase from
the above three sourcrs to be homogeneous, with apparent molecular
weight of 18,000.

Abstract
Saccharomyces
cerevisiae
strain DSM 2155 produced extracellular a-mannanase in MYGP medium
in a growth associated manner. The enzyme activity was optimal at
40°C and pH 5.0. the Km of the enzyme was 0.6 mg mannan
per ml and the Vmax was 3.8 U/mg protein.

Abstract
The
excitatory amino acids aspartate, glutamate and ß-N-oxalyl-L-a, ß-diaminopropionic
acid (ODAP) were determined in
green shoot top and seed of Lathyrus sativus by high
performance liquid chromatographic (HPLC) technique. The
amino acids were derivatized with phenylisothiocyanate
(PITC) and the PITC-amino
acid derivatives were determined by C18 reversed
phasecolumn and detected by UV detector. Integration of the
signals was done by a Hewlett
Packard Integration system. The
efficiency of the HPLC method was compared with that
of an amino acid analyzer.
The HPLC method was found tohave a recovery of 92.2%.
